ABSTRACT

Flexion deformity of the knee is frequently encountered in paediatric orthopaedic practice. It may occur in a variety of conditions including congenital anomalies such as congenital dislocation of the patella, tibial hemimelia or popliteal pterygium syndrome, paralytic conditions such as multiple congenital contractures, spina bifida, polio and cerebral palsy and following trauma to the bone or growth plates in the vicinity of the knee. Flexion deformity of the knee can also develop following any form of acute or chronic arthritis. It is important to be aware of the underlying pathology that resulted in the deformity as treatment will have to be planned accordingly.
