ABSTRACT

Septic arthritis is more common than osteomyelitis in infancy and childhood. Although any joint can be involved, the hip and knee are the most frequently affected and they account for almost two-thirds of all cases of septic arthritis. Involvement of multiple joints occurs in about 5 percent of children with septic arthritis1 and some of the less commonly involved joints may be affected when there is multiple joint involvement. Children under the age of five years appear to be far more susceptible to developing septic arthritis and account for 75 percent of all cases of acute septic arthritis.
