ABSTRACT

Equinus or plantarflexion deformity of the ankle is a very common deformity that can develop in several congenital and acquired conditions encountered in paediatric orthopaedic practice.

While the term ‘equinus’ generally refers to a fixed plantarflexion deformity of the ankle, there are a few instances where the ankle remains in equinus while the child walks but can be passively brought to neutral or even into dorsiflexion when the child is recumbent. This phenomenon is referred to as dynamic equinus and it may be seen in some children with habitual toe-walking and when the gastrocsoleus is spastic as in cerebral palsy.
