Recognizing and managing ill patients

A major part of a junior doctor’s work involves being called to see acutely unwell patients on the wards. This can initially be a daunting task. It should be remembered that most critical illnesses do not occur instantly; the junior doctor has time to act before calling for help (Table 11.1).
