ABSTRACT

Physiotherapists have a number of techniques that are commonly used among ITU patients: = Positioning:

= the avoidance of pressure sores due to immobility.

= Further mobilization: = can help redistribute fluid, and improve alveolar ventilation; limb

exercises can also help to retain range of motion in joints. = Chest physiotherapy:

= percussion and vibration can help to move secretions in the patient’s chest;

= suction also helps with upper airways secretion. = Manual hyperinflation (taking the patient off the ventilator and providing a

large tidal volume): = improves alveolar recruitment.
