ABSTRACT
This is a significant cause of paediatric morbidity and mortality, although the case fatality rate is falling, in contrast to that for pneumococcal disease. There are 13 serogroups, but groups B and C are the major causes of invasive disease in the UK, but not in other parts of the world. The number of cases is falling due to the introduction of group C conjugate vaccines into the UK immunization schedule.
