ABSTRACT

Long chain fatty acids must be esterified with carnitine before they can be transported into the mitochondria where -oxidation takes place. The translocase, carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase, catalyzes the transfer of the acylcarnitines across the inner mitochondrial membrane (Figure 38.1). The enzyme is one of 10 related membrane carrier proteins that shuttle proteins from the cytosol to the mitochondrial matrix.
