ABSTRACT

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2, formally designated human herpesvirus 1 and human herpesvirus 2, respectively, are DNA viruses and members of the family Herpesviridae. Along with varicella-zoster virus (VZV; human herpesvirus 3), human herpes virus 8 (the cause of Kaposi’s sarcoma) and more than 80 viruses, they constitute the subfamily Alphaherpesviridae, the genus Simplexvirus.
