ABSTRACT

Varicella is a disease of primary infancy, identied in ancient times of medical history. In 1892 the common infectious etiology of varicella and herpes zoster was hypothesized by Van Bokay, a concept that was conrmed with the onset of varicella in children via inoculation of vesicular uid from herpes zoster lesions [1]. Varicella Zoster virus (VZV) was isolated in cell culture by Weller in 1953 and was denitely associated with varicella or chickenpox and herpes zoster or shingles by nding similar virions in vesicular lesions, based on comparison of electronic microscopy, antigenic prole, and cytopathic effect (CPE) on cell culture.
