ABSTRACT

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a supercial infection of the dermis caused by Molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV), which typically presents smooth, dome-shaped, esh-colored protrusions on the skin with a central indentation [1]. The disease was rst described by Edward Jenner (1749-1823) as a “tubercle of the skin” common in children; and the term molluscum contagiosum (MC) was rst used by Thomas Bateman (1778-1821) to describe “molluscum bodies,” which are intracytoplasmic inclusions formed in the epidermal tissues of MC lesions [2]. A structure (called Borrel bodies) similar to molluscum bodies is also observed in fowlpoxinfected tissues.
