ABSTRACT
The medical record is so pivotal a topic in informatics that it makes sense to begin our detailed discussion of healthcare information systems here. Consequently, the remainder of this chapter will attempt to look at the benefits and limitations of existing paper-based systems, and the major functions that could in principle be replaced or enhanced by the electronic medical record (EMR).
