ABSTRACT

In an effort to classify corrosion along chemical lines, the following sections are separated into attack by various environments and then specific materials. The area of thermal barrier coatings and the newer one of environmental barrier coatings contain a wealth of information concerning the gaseous corrosion of ceramics. Even though a special section on coatings may be appropriate, these materials are discussed here based upon their chemistry. A strong attempt has been made to follow the original plan of the first edition to follow a classification based upon chemistry.
