ABSTRACT

The cell culture carrier (scaffold) for loading cells into a column is the most important biomaterial for the construction of a bioarticial liver (BAL). Different kinds of materials are used for the construction of BALs of the extracorporeal and implant types. First, for the cases of a BAL of the extracorporeal type, the column volume necessary for human extracorporeal circulation is believed to be 100 mL at the minimum. BAL also has the role of a bioreactor for substance production, and should be available for the production of plasma proteins, physiologically active trace substances such as G-CSF and erythropoietin, and vaccines. The industrial bioreactor for these purposes requires liters of column volume, thus the scaffold used for lling the column should be rigid and have sufcient
