ABSTRACT

Security for a supply chain must concern itself with the known and the unknown. The known includes the actual functions of the segments of the supply chain. The known is also the operating conditions in the environments where the particular supply chain segments are employed. For supply chain security purposes, external damage may be an indicator of a pilferage, theft, or even the introduction of unauthorized or dangerous material into a legitimate package or container. The final phase of the security is to be sure that the transport fully reviews the material, examines its condition, and signs off on a clear proof of delivery. Security of the shipping phase begins with the selection of the material. Pick orders—or other methods of notification and determination of the material to be shipped—provide the identifying features of, data about, and descriptions of the goods.
