ABSTRACT

Principles of quality engineering This chapter introduces the fundamental principles of quality engineering. First, we discuss some of Taguchi’s philosophies regarding quality engineering. We then discuss various possible noises that cause product performance to deviate from the target value. Next, we introduce how a robust design utilizes nonlinear relationships to decrease the loss of quality without increasing the manufacturing cost. The three major phases of quality engineering proposed by Taguchi in designing a product (or manufacturing process)—system design, parameter design, and tolerance design-as well as the famous twostep optimization procedure, are also discussed in this chapter.
