ABSTRACT

An interesting and important aspect of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) 5 is the fact that Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) and Mathematical Markup Language (MathML), both XML applications, have been imported into HTML5. In addition to displaying the occasional vector graphics and mathematical expressions, SVG and MathML add significant scientific dimensions to HTML5 in dealing with 2D geometry and manipulating mathematical formulas. The HTML5 standard calls for inline inclusion of SVG and MathML and most browsers support both natively without loading plug-ins. SVG follows the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language standard in defining animation of graphical objects. Content MathML makes it possible to communicate mathematical expressions between computer programs for processing such as evaluation, simplification, derivation, and integration. Support in HTML5 for MathML will help unleash the huge potential of its application in Web-based mathematics education at all levels.
