ABSTRACT

Epilepsy is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and not caused by a single disorder. Epilepsy may be due to virtually any cerebral pathology, and seizures may occur in association with a large number of systemic disorders. Although there are many causes of recurrent seizures and epilepsy, including cerebral hypoxia at birth, central nervous system (CNS) infections, head trauma and brain tumors, no specific etiology can be found in almost two-thirds of patients.
