ABSTRACT

Selenium is an essential micronutrient that is incorporated into the primary structure of proteins in the form of selenocysteine. Selenoproteins facilitate redox reactions that underlie a number of biochemical processes. Among them are protection against oxidative damage, metabolism of thyroid hormones, support of DNA synthesis, and regulation of transcription factors. Selenium deficiency occurs in China and some other countries but not in theUnitedStates. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for selenium is 55mg=day for adults.
