5.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Crooked River watershed is unique among rural watersheds in New England given the wide range of values placed on the watershed land and on the Crooked River itself. The river supplies more than 40 percent of the surface water inflow to Sebago Lake. Sebago Lake is not only a recreation destination for southern Maine but also the municipal water supply source for 11 communities and approximately 200,000 customers in and around Portland, Maine, the largest and fastest growing urban center in the state. Recognition of development pressures on the watershed land have led to projected high future risk to surface water supply. Consequently, management of Crooked River watershed land for drinking water quality and supply protection has been identified as a special interest of critical importance to the wider water supply delivery and watershed land conservation community.
