ABSTRACT

Although recent advances in technology have made the use of laparoscopic procedures more widely practicable, the benefits of these minimally invasive operations must be weighed against the unique complications associated with laparoscopic instrumentation and techniques. Surgeons must be familiar with these complications and assess their personal experience and skill levels when considering the risks and benefits of a laparoscopic procedure as an alternative to an open operation. Complications of laparoscopic surgery may be classified as intraoperative and postoperative.
