ABSTRACT

Approximately 90,000 ventral hernia repairs are performed each year in the United States, making it the second most common type of abdominal hernia operation. In patients who undergo laparotomy, incisional hernias develop in about 2-11 %, with incidence rates greater than 40% in those who develop postoperative wound infections. Unfortunately, open repairs of these defects often are unsatisfactory, with recurrence rates ranging from 25% to 52%.
