I. TERMINOLOGY Degeneration of the stabilizing attachments at the esophageal hiatus ultimately manifests as paraesophageal hernias. Although the etiology for this acquired defect is not fully understood, its association with advanced age implicates chronic stress to the ligamentous phrenoesophageal membrane of the crura as a causative factor (Fig. 1).
