ABSTRACT
Each year in the United States approximately 680,000 inguinal hernia repairs are performed. Over the past two centuries hernia repairs have evolved considerably. In 1986 Lichtenstein introduced the tension-free concept and used prosthetic material to reinforce the inguinal canal floor. The tension-free repair revolutionized hernia surgery and resulted in decreased rates of recurrence and considerably less disability related to recovery from the operation.
