Sinusitis is a common complication of viral upper respiratory infection and aller-

gic inflammation. Although the paranasal sinuses are believed to be sterile under

normal circumstances, the upper respiratory tract-specifically the nose and oral

cavity-are heavily colonized with normal flora.
