ABSTRACT
The Canadian health care system, known as Medicare, developed incrementally over a period of time. As with the United States, there was considerable opposition to this development, especially from the medical profession. But unlike the U.S. system, the opposition was overcome. Medicare has been shaped by the federalist nature of the Canadian political system and the values that underlie the political and health care systems.
