ABSTRACT

Patient Position The patient is in the prone position; the knee is slightly flexed to facilitate palpation of the popliteal fossa borders and to accentuate the popliteal skin crease.

Landmarks A triangle is constructed; the base consists of the popliteal crease and the two sides are composed of the semimembranous and semitendinous tendons (medially) and the biceps tendon (laterally). A perpendicular line is drawn bisecting the popliteal crease line and extending 7 to 8 cm cephalad. The needle insertion site is just lateral (0.5-1 cm) to the 7-to 8-cm mark.
