ABSTRACT

Spinal traction is a therapeutic modality that is applied via an apparatus that exerts a distractive force in line with the axis of the spinal column. The use of spinal traction dates back to the time of Hippocrates, Galen, and Aesculapius, with very exact descriptions of the technique in their writings. Some illustrations show patients who are firmly attached to the apparatus while axial traction is applied by the use of ropes, winches, and levers. In most of these drawings, one of the operators also applies simultaneous pressure to what appears to be a hump.
