ABSTRACT

By definition, failed back syndrome is pain that persists into the postsurgical period. In one series, it was seen to develop in 10 to 15% of patients who underwent spinal decompressive surgery and in 15 to 20% in the ensuing 3 to 5 years after fusion (Diwan et al). Although the numbers of such patients appear to be small, they comprise a significant portion of patients who attend pain management clinics.
