The importance of the iron storage function of ferritin is supported by the observation that this protein is ubiquitously maintained in all living forms from bacteria to eukaryotic cells. Furthermore, ferritin possesses the capacity to store iron under the Fe
form, a safe form that is unable to catalyze the production of free radicals until it is immobilized.
