ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with inherited disorders that exclusively, primarily, or predominantly affect the cones. These disorders include some with histopathologic abnormalities of the photoreceptors (the cone dystrophies) and others with normal cones, but with abnormal visual pigment content (the inborn color vision disorders or dyschromatopsias). In the cone dystrophies, the physical loss of cones is manifested by reduced visual acuity, in addition to the color vision abnormalities. The rods are often affected as well. In the inborn color vision disorders all retinal functions except color vision are normal or only minimally affected.
