ABSTRACT
The extracutaneous effects of nonionizing radiation constitute an area of expanding interest. The eye is an obvious target for radiation-induced alterations, and both acute and chronic changes are observed. Nonionizing radiation can also alter the function of the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems. Most people have been accustomed to thinking of exposure to such radiation as a local modality with its effects limited to the skin, whereas in reality it is a systemic modality.
