ABSTRACT

Right at the start of the project life cycle, at the planning stage, there are a number of important decisions to be made that will define the characteristics of a crossing. This chapter discusses the important elements of early planning that will be needed to develop an immersed tunnel project to a preliminary stage that can confirm its viability. It touches on a number of subjects that are covered in more detail throughout the book but does so in order to illustrate the broad thinking that is required at the start of an immersed tunnel project.
