ABSTRACT

DEFINITION ■ Acute renal failure (ARF) is an increase in the serum level

of creatinine of 0.5 mg/dL daily or BUN of 10 mg/dL daily over several days, with a decrease in glomerular filtration rate.

■ Pseudoacute renal failure can occur when there is an increase in creatinine or BUN without a decrease in the glomerular filtration rate. ▲ Increased creatinine-increase in protein intake, part of

rhabdomyolysis, trimethoprim, cefoxitin, flucytosine. ▲ Increased BUN-gastrointestinal tract bleeding, tissue

trauma, glucocorticoids, tetracycline.
