Historically, prostatic biopsies were performed under digital guidance for the evaluation of a palpable abnormality found on digital rectal examination (DRE). First described by Wantanabe, et al in 1968,1 transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) did not gain widespread clinical implementation until the mid-1980s.2
