ABSTRACT

The origins of branding can be traced back over 2,000 years, to the times of the Greeks and Romans. Initially in those days, little product identification was required, as most goods were made locally and the purchaser had a close relationship with the supplier of the goods. As the Roman Empire expanded, the distance of the product’s point of sale from its source increased; this led for the need for “marks” to establish the origin of a product. They acted as an indicator of quality from the individuals that created them and, later, along with signatures when added to bowls or manuscripts, they formed the first brand marks and became the starting point of where we are today.
