ABSTRACT

Introduction The vast majority of autoerotic deaths are related to hangings (approximately 70% to 80%), followed by plastic bag and chemical substances (10% to 30%). However, it is important to keep in mind that other types of autoerotic deaths also exist: electrocution, overdressing/ body wrapping, foreign body insertion, and atypical asphyxia methods.1,2 These atypical autoerotic deaths, probably accounting for 5% to 10% of cases,1,3 are often missed because police investigators, pathologists, or other forensic experts are not aware of their existence. To restrict autoerotic deaths as only asphyxia by hanging and plastic bags is unfortunately a common mistake.
