ABSTRACT

The World Health Organization (WHO) dened obesity as an excess of fat accumulation leading to adverse effects on health. Persons with body mass index (BMI) in the range of 25-30 kg/m2 are considered overweight, and with a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 as obese [1]. During the past two decades, over one billion adults worldwide have become overweight and 300 million are obese [2]. The prevalence of obesity has attained the proportions of an epidemic not only in developed but also in developing countries [3,4]. This trend was acknowledged by WHO term “globesity” [2]. Obesity is a chronic, highly prevalent, and refractory disease that poses increased risk for a variety of medical conditions including sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers [3,5].
