ABSTRACT

Animal communication occurs when a signal sent by one individual has an effect on the behavior of at least one other individual. Communication happens via all senses and can occur through smell, touch, movement, gestures, sound, vibration, facial expressions, electrical signals, and coloration. These various forms of communication serve many functions: individual or species recognition, courtship rituals, warning off predators, aggression and territoriality, and signaling about food or other resources.
