ABSTRACT

Recently I conducted a study on people's emotional responses to images flashed on the screen. The respondents selected the emotion word that best represented their reaction to the images while the intensity and valence of their emotional response were measured with biometric methods. Most of these studies results are beyond the scope of this chapter, but in Figure 13.1 I have shown the results on how the different emotions lay in this two-dimensional space. Intensity of emotion and emotional valence and are represented in this graph on a 1 to 9 scale, with 5 being the mid-point that separates negative from positive emotion. Media like

TV commercials, programming, videogames, and various media elements such as visual game scenes, music, etc can be placed as well on this coordinate system. Placing games and media elements in this emotion space, and calculating the 'emotion coordinates' can help describe, understand and compare the emotional impact of games and game elements.
