The pituitary gland, located in the sella turcica, is divided into anterior, intermediate and posterior lobes. The anterior pituitary has five different cell types secreting six hormones. By cell type, the somatotropes secrete growth hormone, corticotropes secrete adenocorticotropic hormone, mammotropes secrete prolactin, thyrotropes secrete thyroid-stimulating hormone and gonadotropes secrete FSH/LH.
