ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Uterine leiomyomata, or fibroids, are neoplasms of the myometrial smooth muscle that are the most common tumors in women of reproductive age. Although leiomyomata are not malignant, their presence poses a significant healthcare burden and reproductive threat for the many women who have them. Women with leiomy omata may present with menorrhagia, dysmen orrhea, chronic pelvic pain, and pressure symptoms on adjoining viscera, particularly the bladder. Leiomyomata are also implicated in infertility, recurrent miscarriage, preterm rupture of the fetal membranes, preterm delivery, post partum hemorrhage, and puerperal sepsis.1
