ABSTRACT

The role of androgens in reproductive aging remains controversial. The advantages and disadvantages of androgen treatment in menopausal women – and to a lesser extent, in aging men – are being asked not only by clinicians and scientists but also by patients. The most frequently asked questions include the possible masculinization effects of androgens, how to minimize this side effect, what preparation of androgens should be used, and whether concomitant estrogen should be given. Many studies have evaluated the benefits of androgens on psychosexual function; however studies on the effects of androgens on bone mass and breast tissue have just begun. It appears that there is a role of androgens in some menopausal women, although methods of administration and suitable doses still need to be perfected. In males, however, the role of androgens has not been fully investigated. Androgens and Reproductive Aging reflects the latest advances in the field. It addresses the pathophysiology of androgen deficiency, new concepts and novel treatment modalities, effects of androgens on osteoporosis and breast cancer, and effects of androgen deficiency in males.
