ABSTRACT

Most initiating documents are long on tasks and short on instructions, but they will normally sketch out a perceived problem, scope, level of granted authority, and time period for execution. ese appear to be the minimum attributes necessary to launch any work e§ort, so you should be prepared to inquire about them should they be lacking when you are called to serve. Traditional projects include feasibility studies that precede substantial e§orts but denemeasure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) projects incorporate these into the Dene, Measure, and Analyze phases. A short feasibility/advisability study is still in order prior to committing any signicant amount of resources, so you may want to request a short period (probably not more than a work week) to conduct one. is also allows you to scout the environment, determine whether similar/parallel projects are underway or have been completed/abandoned, and who you may want to accompany you on this journey as part of your team.
