ABSTRACT
The mathematical theory to be discussed was developed in a remarkable series of joint papers by J. Neyman and E.S. Pearson. Their interpretation of the theory was more directly linked to decision-making than is the account given here; we return to the decision-theoretical aspects in Section 11.6.
