ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the inclusion of disability issues into all phases of disaster management and presents promising best practices that have emerged over the last few decades. In addition, remaining challenges are identified and discussed along with ways to include the disability community. The authors consider the current state of disability and disasters, legal and policy mandates, gaps and challenges, as well as providing U.S.-based and international examples. As these issues gain more attention globally, our goal is that this chapter will contribute to a growing body of knowledge in this field.
