ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a brief overview of how simple: images are: stored and displayed on the screen, especially as computer graphics impacts modern game development. It is by no means a complete story. During the early days of computer graphics, a variety of rather complicated hardware and software tricks were employed by game console manufacturers to display moving images: on a television screen,. Techniques such as "racing the beam" allowed programmers to extend the capabilities of very limited hardware. Although interesting, the details are not relevant to modern game development and are beyond the scope of this text. Instead, this chapter focuses on some basic theories and implementations of the: standard graphics techniques used today.
