ABSTRACT

There are 10 steps to observing processes and building a current-state map that faithfully records our observations. Each step listed in Figure 4.1 is described in detail later. Before you begin mapping, we recommend that you reserve a meeting room in which to build your map. You will need a space big enough to train your team and conduct conversations once you return from observing the actual area where the work is performed (or, the “gemba,” as it is commonly referred to in Lean management, which is the Japanese word for “the real place”).
