ABSTRACT
Behavioural adaptation is the collection of ‘behaviours which may occur following the introduction of changes to the road-vehicle-user system and which were not intended by the initiators of the change’ (OECD, 1990, p. 23). There is converging evidence, as noted in other chapters of this volume, that behavioural adaptation has negative/offsetting safety effects; however, the degree to which behavioural adaptation is problematic for older drivers is less known. In this chapter, we address this issue within the context of the known crash risk and driving patterns of older drivers. Consideration is also given to the effects of aging on functional abilities and other factors that might predispose older drivers to the negative effects of behavioural adaptation.
