ABSTRACT

History A 53-year-old female office worker is seen by her GP with a persistent cough which started 4 weeks ago. In the last few days, it has become productive of yellow and green sputum. She has just completed a second course of antibiotics which have not improved her symptoms. She denies breathlessness, but reports feeling notably fatigued in recent weeks, with excessive sweating, particularly at night, which she thought may be related to the menopause. She has never smoked, and has not travelled outside Europe since returning from South Africa with her family as a teenager. She has no other medical history of note.
