ABSTRACT

History A 69-year-old man presents to his GP with pain and stiffness in his left hip. He has had intermittent pain for some months which is getting worse and is particularly painful at night, with no radiation. He has previously been very active, but his walking is now severely restricted. He also has the pain at rest and denies any injury. He has been taking ibuprofen with no relief. He has no other joint pain. He reports being troubled by urinary frequency at night which he has had ‘for years’ and he recently had an episode of urinary retention and currently has a urinary catheter in situ. He is awaiting urology review. He has no constitutional symptoms or weight loss and takes bendroflumethiazide and amlodipine for hypertension.
